Toyota 86 TRD Griffon Concept Sheds 500 Pounds to go Ferrari Fast: 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon – AutoGuide

By , January 11, 2013 3:00 pm

Ahead of its debut, Toyota bragged that its new GT 86 TRD Griffon concept was faster around the Tskuba circuit than a Ferrari 458. Revealed today at the Tokyo Auto Salon, even more surprising is the fact that it does so without any added power.

Exactly how the engineers at Toyota Racing Development achieved such a feat is hidden under a body that looks deceptively stock.

Along with a completely reworked suspension system the GT 86 receives a long list of light weight components. In fact, the front bumper, doors, roof, rear bumper and hood are all made of carbon fiber. The front fenders are also made of the light weight carbon weave, and measure wider than stock. Further shedding pounds, the windows save the windshield have been replaced with polycarbonate.

In total, the Griffon Concept sheds 500 lbs compared to the stock GT 86 (already an incredibly light car), to tip the scales at just 2,280 lbs.

Toyota Supra Inspired GT 86 Revealed With Twincharged Engine: 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon – AutoGuide

By , January 11, 2013 1:37 pm

The star of the Tokyo Auto Salon, the GRMN Sports FR Concept is a GT 86 build by Toyota’s motorsports partner Gazoo Racing and inspired by the legendary Supra itself.

With unmistakably original bodywork, the real story lies under the hood where Toyota has mated the 4-cylider boxer engine with both a supercharger and a turbocharger to deliver 330 hp.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon Coverage

As for the sheetmetal, it helps transform the GT 86 (sold here as the Scion FR-S) from a fun weekend toy, to a genuine sports car that looks capable of tangling with a Porsche. Along with the Supra-inspired taillights, flared bodywork, massive rear spoiler and quad-exhaust system, the car itself is 4-inches longer than a conventional GT 86 and a total of 3-inches wider.

The wider body also makes room for some big 18-inch wheels with wired tires measuring 245 up front and 265 in the rear.

The customization doesn’t stop outside the car either with a white and black cabin, including beautifully stitched two-tone leather racing seats.

tcmaboy’s TAS Coverage installment #6 – 4×4 madness!

By , January 23, 2011 12:48 pm

Urban 4×4 edition. Brought to you by the letter F and the letter J.

So you live in the city, but you would like to project that outdoor lifestyle that you think you would live if there wasn't so much pavement around. Not to worry there are plenty of products out there for you.

FJs featured heavily at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon. This example from custom car builder L Garage demonstrates that if no mud is handy you can simply park in the rain, or near a construction site, to get that recently wheeled look.

Image

Wheel maker Crimson was on hand with an FJ to show off their Myrtle line. The base concept is "So Cal" styling.

Image

In addition to the Myrtle line Crimson also had this 200 series Cruiser to display their DAMD line.

Image

In a land where cars get scrapped with only 50K on the clock its always good to see a survivor.

Image

Students from the Shizuoka Automotive College showed off their handiwork with this Hilux Surf.

Image

I am not sure if the rumors about size are true, but if you need a compensator then Predator is your company.

Image

For those that like to hang out at the beach check out this Mitsubishi Delcia from Road House. With plenty of passenger space inside and living accommodations on top you and your friends can have a good old fashioned beach party.

Image

Some of you may remember the Samurai. Well, here it lives on as the Jimny and if you enjoy wheeling in Japan this may be the rig for you. ORS Taniguchi supplies body parts, bumpers, skid plates, lockers, lifts, etc. for your lil wheeler.

Image

Across the hall was the N's Stage. This area seems to be the combined effort of magazines, dealers, parts suppliers, and events promoters. Several magazine rigs were featured in the booth along with ads for a series of off road meets and competitions. I guess it goes to show that when the wheeling bug bites, its hard to resist.

Image

Image

The Little Monster was quite the rig. The styling is oddly reminiscent of the FJ Cruiser. The tiny bed is perfect for easy access to recovery gear, the winch is a must have, and to top things off there is a turbo hiding under the hood.

tcmaboy’s TAS coverage installment #5 – Super Cars and Prii

By , January 21, 2011 4:27 pm

These cars may not be as racy, but they sure are super.

No, the girls do not come with it (as if you could fit two anyway).

Image

I had no idea Gulf sponsored Lambos, or is this just GT-40 envy?

Image

Sombody, please kill me. I'M BEGGING YOU! PLEASE! At least repaint me….

Image

Get a good look quick before the defective heat shield falls off and it catches on fire.

Image

DOUBLE BONUS POST!

Now, if the gas guzzling super car life ins't for you then you can always go out and get something else. Something uninspiring, something utterly boring, something that says "I care about the marketing about the environment, and I want everyone to know it." Well, then perhaps you should just go out and get a Prius. Sadly though the Prius is not the most attractive piece of machinery. Is there anyone out there that can pimp my Prius? Yes, that's right, when there are no cool cars available you just kind of have to go with what is left.

Not even dream car maker Tommy Kaira can resist. Next thing you know these will be appearing in Gran Turismo….

Image

Beverly Auto has plenty of accessories for your beigemobile and had this carbon vinyl wrapped Prius on hand to display them.

Image

When a plush interior just isn't enough go see Grace for that little extra touch. Perhaps the animal hide exterior will camouflage the eco-mobile underneath.

Image

For those looking to not just get good mileage, but hypermileage Goodyear has the eco stage line of tires for you.

Image

This guy seems to be having an identity crisis. It wants to be cool, but just can't figure out why it doesn't fit in.

Image

If you wish to be truly cool then you must carry things to such an extreme that you simply cannot be denied. Show Up Colors had this Prius on hand to display their line of paint.

Image

If only the cover matched the book.
